Alans Biography

 

Alan first joined Y.C.B.C. in 1962 at the age of seven.  He progressed through the coaching groups firstly with Derek Stubbs as Chief Coach and latterly under Trevor Tiffany.  A successful County and District swimmer he won the boys butterfly and IM from 11yrs to 14yrs before  changing his main stroke to backstroke and  becoming Yorkshire Mens champion in 1972. Alan represented the North Eastern Counties at the first National Age Group Championships held at ‘Derby Baths’ Blackpool gaining a silver medal in the 11yr boys butterfly.  Over the next six years there were three bronze medals at National level, one more at butterfly and two at backstroke.

After joining the Police Force in 1974 Alan continued to swim and won a bronze medal at the European Police championships in Amersfoort, Holland. A keen Life Saver within the police he was National Police individual champion in 1979 and 1981. He also represented Great Britain at the 1978 World Life Saving Championships. After coaching the North Yorkshire Police swimming team Alan became a swimming teacher with YCBC and assisted with coaching throughout the 1990’s   He is a qualified club coach and has held his current post since September 2000.

Alan is married to Judith (Harris) who was also a YCBC swimmer and has two daughters Katy (a national age group butterfly champion) and Alice (a Yorkshire and North Eastern Counties Champion).
