A tribute to Neil from Alan Sunderland YCBC coach
I have had the greatest honour
of coaching swimming alongside Neil over the past 8 years.
I’m sure that hundreds, if
not thousands, of children - some now adults - would thank him for his teaching
and coaching at New Earswick Swimming Club, City of York Council lessons and
latterly at York City Baths Club when Alice, then Olivia and then Edward also
joined the club.
Neil just couldn’t say
“no”. If cover was needed for a squad or lesson, Neil was always
there, when Andrea took maternity leave for 6 months, Neil was there, when I
fell down the stairs and broke my ribs, Neil was there. Clubs like ours
just cannot survive without enthusiastic voluntary support and for Neil, we will
all be eternally grateful.
His greatest asset was his
positive attitude, it was infectious, he always had a kind word for swimmers
(maybe not his own children at times!) and always offered advice on technique or
competition.
Those of you involved in
swimming will understand the 12-14 hours days on poolside for galas. Neil
always volunteered his services and assisted with the 40-50 children we would
have competing. He had a very dry sense of humour, which was sometimes
lost on the youngsters - we would laugh as the children looked confused.
Sometimes, when inexperienced swimmers try too hard they can tend to forget
technique and throw their arms around uncontrollably - I remember one time,
pointing out such a swimmer, I asked Neil for his opinion - he just looked
at me and said “agricultural”. That was certainly one of the most
unusual ways of describing a swimming stroke I had ever heard - I hasten to add
that that particular swimmer is now a brilliant technician and Neil had his
input on that!
He was also a known comedian
and one particular year at Bradford Christmas Meet, an end of the year fun meet
where York CBC had a good reputation for winning the coaches fancy dress
competition - Neil was poolside coach and was under pressure to keep up
tradition - he kept his costume very much under wraps right up to the last
minute and walked onto poolside to a rapturous reception looking more like Ozzy
Osborne than Ozzy Osborne - first prize was secured yet again!
At our Club Championships, he
was our announcer and he would keep everyone entertained throughout the events
with his witty repertoire. When the club bought a wireless microphone, we
saw him emerge from his desk like a phoenix and walk up and down poolside as if
it was Sunday Night at the London Palladium. This brought on a challenge
by Mike Waterfall and Trish and John Fowler to mention as many Beatles song
titles in his commentary as he could, I cannot remember how many he fitted in -
he certainly knew more than his challengers - and we don’t think any of the
spectators really noticed, but to those of us poolside it was memorable, his
final comment of the evening was
“ Well done swimmers, thanks
for coming - It’s been a hard days night”.
Well, thank you Neil - your
life has been cruelly short but it has been well done.
You will be well remembered.
A Plea on behalf of Neil's Family
As noted in Alan's tribute above, Neil dressed up as Ozzy Ozborne at one of the Bradford Christmas meets. The family unfortunately do not have a photo of this and they would dearly love to have one. If any one has one they would like to share with the family please send it to me at the club e-mail address and I will ensure it gets to the family.
