Age Group Championships

The second Gala of the North Eastern Counties Age Group Championships was held at Ponds Forge Sheffield with York City Baths Clubs top age group swimmers in fine form. The medal tally for the second weekend was 5 gold, 3 silver and two bronze with a total of 17 finalists.

10 year old Anna Atkinson-Smith had another excellent weekend as she secured the ‘Top Girl’ award by taking 3 gold in the !00m breaststroke, 200m butterfly and 400m Individual Medley in a National Age Group Qualifying time, bronze in the 100m backstroke and a 4th place in the 200m freestyle.

Andrew Burns 11yrs had a close call finishing second in the 11yrs ‘Top Boy’ category after a  hard fought battle with Daniel Johnson from Middlesbrough. Andrew returned with gold in the 200m butterfly and 100m breaststroke then collected silver in both the 200m freestyle and 400m IM.  It was significant that all Andrews swims were within the NAQT.  Brother Chris Burns 14yrs secured a long course National Age Group Championship Qualifying time taking silver in the 100m breaststroke. Edward Clarkson 10yrs was the other York medallist as he took bronze in the 200m butterfly.

Other finalists from York were; Claire Owen 10yrs 6th 400m IM and 8th 200m butterfly, James Wilby 11yrs 4th 100m breaststroke, Tom Jackson 14yrs 7th 100m breaststroke, Sophie Edmunds-Allen 10th 100m breaststroke. Sophie Glasby 12yrs finished 6th in the 200m backstroke in a NAQT and also hit another NAQT as she finished 12th in the 800m freestyle.

Other York swimmers achieving personal best times were; Jennifer Hodgson, Rachael Webster, Kirsty Smith, Aaron Perry, Simon Duston, Lucie Calpin, Hannah Carty, Alice Carty, Oliver Wilby, James Rogers, Bradley Swainston, Georgina Hart and Duncan Rajan.
